Glass Trollbeads only became readily available on the market during the early part of 2002, they were the brainchild of the main Trollbeads designed, Lise Aagaard. Until she designed and created the first Glass Trollbead the main Trollbeads were either gold, silver or made from precious stones and a combination of other materials.

Lise design acumen and ideas are now responsible for some of the most popular glass beads in the world. They come in a wide variety of styles, colors and variations and can be used for any number of different bracelets, moods and personalities. A selection of beautiful glass Trollbeads can be seen here. You can find out more about the history of Trollbeads here.

Glass Trollbeads are made by hand, like all other Trollbeads. The material they are made from is from a combination of sand and of soda which is basically what the glass is made from. There are only a few places in the world where this is naturally occurring and doesn't need to be artificially mixed, Syria is one of these very places.

The glass rods made from this substance are taken and heated to an extremely high heat (around 600 - 800 degrees Celsius), so hot that the glass chances consistency and instead of being solid it becomes liquid, it's at this point that the glass is now malleable enough to be worked with. The glass is then wrapped around a steel rod whilst continuing to be heated over the heat of the naked flame, it's wound around at the same time to form the shape of the glass bead, with the hole in the center being created by the metal rod the bead is formed around.

Once the basic shape of the bead has been formed, then the bead can have other patterns added to it such as stripes, colors, pigments and indentations. Different colors will melt at different temperatures.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMKV8yLJiDU

In the final stages of the bead creation, it's rotated quickly within the naked flame, this rounds the shape of the bead perfectly. The beads are then removed from the rod and final touches can be added such as the addition of the silver center piece which allows the bead to slide along the Trollbead bracelet without scratching the glass bead.

The oldest beads that we know of are from places such as China, they date back some 2,000 years before the birth of Christ. So although Lise Aagaard was the first to design and market her beads in the Trollbead range, she was not the first person to come up with glass beads.

If you have ever thought about buying or have bought a unique Trollbead, also know as OOAK Trollbeads (One Of A Kind Trollbeads) then you'll have surely visited many of the online websites and resources around and wondered why the price of OOAK Trollbeads is no unpredictable. Prices of OOAK Trollbeads tend to vary greatly depending on where you look, who's selling it and how unique it really is. There are also many other factors to be taken into account.

The first thing you should always consider when you're trying to place a value onto a unique bead is the visual beauty of the bead, after all that's usually the reason you go for a bead, because it's beautiful. These are the beads which will often carry the highest price in the marketplace, the demand is there because of it's beauty and so the price will go up. Because OOAK Trollbeads are essentially "leftovers" or "unsuitable" for main commercial sale there are not only "good" OOAK Trollbeads but bad ones as well which are too "defective" to actually be sold. It's for this reason that the loss of profit from the "bad" beads is also taken into account when a seller is valuing their "good" OOAK Trollbeads.

When an official Trollbead seller buys OOAK Trollbeads they buy a "lot" of beads in bulk, they are not able to choose which beads they like or don't like, so for that reason it may turn out that they can only sell 25-50% of their purchase. The remaining beads which cannot be sold (because of quality reasons) have to have their cost covered and that's what's meant by "the bead beads are taken into account".

When you are seeking out to buy yourself a new OOAK Trollbead ask yourself what you're willing to pay, how much value it will add to your collection and what it is you're looking for. Then go shopping!.

Trollbeads and associated Trollbead jewelry has been around for just under thirty five years, they first appeared on the market back in 1976 when Soren Nielson, who was from Denmark, created a very small silver pearl which is known as the mask, this was created from a wax model. Soren drilled a hole through the centre of the first bead he created and the practice of placing beads, or charms, onto jewelry was born. But it was Lise Aagaard who truly took the manufacturing of Trollbeads to the next level. In the 1980's Lise started as an apprentice making Trollbeads, it wasn't long before she'd started designing her own beads, the most well known of which was the glass Trollbeads which first became widely available on the market in 2002.

As time has passed and moved on, so has the technology available to make the beads. This has lead to the introduction of beads of many different shapes, colors, sizes and styles. This means that now beads can be made to fit pretty much any occasion including birthdays, christenings, naming ceremonies, graduations and anniversaries. By taking a collection of beads you are able to create your own unique bracelet designed by you just to suit your own taste, mood or personality.

There are currently several hundred, if not thousands, of types of Trollbead available on the market. Each and every year more new Trollbeads are released onto the market and older beads retired, hence the range of retired Trollbeads so many people lust after. There are currently beads available based around plants, animals, names, mythology, astrology, fairy tales and many other themes, there is literally something for everyone. Beads are also available in a wide variety of materials, the most popular being glass and silver, but in addition to those beads are common seen made from gold, precious stones and amber.

Trollbeads are not only perfect for your own jewelry collection, they are also perfect to buy as a gift for someone. Whilst buying a whole bracelet for someone may just be too expensive, the many types and styles of bead on the market made it simple to be able to choose a single precious bead which is unique to one individual. In particular letter Trollbeads are a favourite gift idea since people can give a person's initials or another letter of significance.

Amber Trollbeads are made from the Amber which is secreted by plants and forms a solid rock of amber, you can learn more about amber here. These amber rocks are then collected and used to make jewelry, there are many different shades of amber, all of which are an "amber" color as you would expect. Some of the ambers are very dark and almost black whereas some of the ambers are extremely light and almost yellow, but all ambers have a nice orange tint to them. When the ambers ae collected they are stored into separate bags based on their color, this way it's much easier and quicker to make them into the different shades of beaded jewelry. Because of the many different shades of amber available you will find that it's even possible to make an entire Trollbead bracelet from amber Trollbeads alone, it's not something a lot of people do but if it's to your taste then it can work very well.

So how are these raw amber "rocks" turned into the beautiful Trollbeads we see on the shop shelves and the internet?

Well, the process is simple but also length and takes any one person a couple of hours to make just one bead. The following steps are applied during this time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrsc3DhHdzk

Step 1 - The amber rocks of one particular shade are taken and shaped roughly into the shape of a bead which you know and love, this is done by hand on a type of sanding machine.

Step 2 - Once the basic shape of the amber bead has been formed, the craftsman will take a drill and form a hole in the centre of the bead, this is the hole which will be used by the purchaser to thread the bead onto their bracelet.

Step 3 - Now that the bead has a hole and it resembles the basic shape of the bead it's time for the craftsman to shape the bead into a more perfect shape. Again, the sanding machine is used with the bead fixed onto a length of rod, the rod is move backwards and forwards with the bead spinning against the sanding machine. This gives the bead the perfectly rounded and smoothe shape.

Step 4 - During this step patterns are added to the bead if it's going to have them. This involves drilling, crafting and cutting shapes out of the beads or carving directly into the surface of the bead. This is one of the most complex parts of the process.

Step 5 - Now that the bead is the right shape and the pattern has been applied the bead center has to be hollowed out more so that the silver insert will fit into it.

Step 6 - Finally the bead is polished and the silver center finished to reveal one finished amber Trollbead.
